Sterling Silver Charm Jump Rings and Split Rings What's the difference between a jump ring and a split ring? A jump ring is a solid silver wire in the shape of the ring which has an opening. You twist it apart, put it on your charm and then twist it back together. A split ring looks like a miniature key ring. You slide the charm on one of the wires and then slide it around until it fits through both wires. Some people feel the split ring is safer, however, with sterling silver it often gets out of shape and the two wires won't fit back together very well. You may lose the charm when the split ring catches on something. The stainless split rings work very well but it is more difficult to get your charm on the stainless split ring. You can also visit your local jeweler and have your charms soldered on. The disadvantage to this method is that you have to pay to have this done each time you want to move your charm around. The cost usually runs from $4.00 wholesale to $12.00 retail. This can add up quickly. When we put your charm bracelet together, we use jump rings.
